AirBnB Review: Lake Tekapo (NZ) Starlight House

AirBnB Review: Lake Tekapo (NZ) Starlight House

After landing in Christchurch, we picked up our bags as well as rental car and drove 3 hours to Lake Tekapo. The goal of this adventure was to explore more of New Zealand’s “Southern Lakes” region and also photograph the Milky Way over the famous Church Of The Good Shepherd in Lake Tekapo. Regular readers probably already saw my image here, which happened to be one of my best photos ever.

Anyway Tekapo itself is a small town situated on the lake of the very same name so accommodation options can be rather limited especially in peak season (it was around Christmas time). So I was amazed to find this modern house with panoramic windows on Airbnb. It seemed absolutely too good to be true that it was even available considering everything was booked up well in advance.

Kylie is a superhost and did not disappoint in having everything ready for us before we arrived. Instructions were to the point and the property was wonderfully clean and well equipped. The views of course were drop dead gorgeous.

The house featured 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and a washroom equipped with both a washer and dryer. The free Wi-Fi was fast and the TV had cable though we didn’t use this at all given that we were always just enjoying the views outside. Air conditioning was available throughout the house (it was not a central unit style) but that’s really unnecessary given the pleasant temperatures at night.

The living space and kitchen had panoramic floor to ceiling windows which looked out onto the Southern Alps and Lake Tekapo. My parents and sister who did not wish to do battle with the infamous sandflies of New Zealand just relaxed and enjoyed the views from the deck.

And there really was no missing the views from any part of this space.

The first bedroom had two twin beds, and the other two had queen beds so the place is ideal for upto 6 people. I slept in the room with two twin beds because it also had large expansive windows facing the lake.

Bad linens and towels were provided as mentioned in the listing. While one of the bathrooms was attached to the larger bedroom, the other was out in the hallway. Both featured nice stand in showers.

As I mentioned before there was both a washer and dryer on this property and the trash disposal dumpster was located just outside that door.

We spent a total of 3 nights at this location and thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it. The house is right across the street and up the hill from the lake shore and just a short drive from Lake Pukaki. It was literally a stone’s throw away to the famous Church of the Good Shepard though nothing in Tekapo is really that far away.

I probably went out for photo walks only once or twice during my stay here and just soaked in the views from my deck in the mornings. I saw some spectacular vistas, which made it well worth the immediate drive over from Christchurch after 17 hours of flying. a sunset over a hill

Bottom Line:

I don’t think you can really find a better place to stay in Tekapo than Kylie’s, especially for a family of 4. This stay was definitely one of my finest at any Airbnb worldwide.
