As I tried to speed through this trip report, I realized that I forgot to mention our fantastic day trip to St. Moritz. St. Moritz is about a two hour drive from the Menaggio villa, and the plan was to take a ride on the beautiful Bernina Express. But of course due to our delayed flights, we completely missed the train, and ended up just driving the entire way.

St. Moritz is an alpine resort town at an elevation of around 6000 feet in the Swiss canton of Graubunden. St. Moritz has the unique position of being the midpoint for the Bernina Express and starting/terminating point for the Glacier Express, which are two of the most scenic rail rides in the world. The town itself is noted for being an elite training ground for winter sports and was the site of the 1928 and 1948 Winter Olympics.

Because of we arrived a day late into Italy, we were not able to get into St. Moritz until after the last train to Tirano. The initial plan was to park our car in St. Moritz and take the Bernina Express for the somewhat abbreviated journey between St. Moritz and Tirano. Anyway this plan altogether fell apart, and we ended up spending some quality time in St. Moritz after the town was pretty much closed down 🙂

Here are some of my best pictures from St. Moritz:

Have you been to St. Moritz? Have you taken the Bernina or Glacier Express?

Stay tuned for our journey through the Bernina Express….
