Brief Review: Hyatt Regency Amsterdam (It’s a great value!)

The Hyatt Regency Amsterdam is about a 20 minute car ride from Amsterdam Airport. Though the hotel isn’t exactly in the city centre, most of the nice areas are still well within reach of a walk and especially a bike.

Traffic on this particular Saturday was super light so we made it without any trouble. Normally I wouldn’t think of driving a car into Amsterdam, but my dad’s Hyatt Globalist status got us free parking on award stays. This is one of the best benefits of the World of Hyatt program and perhaps the best any hotel chain offers. As I mentioned before I booked this hotel using points and as a category 4 hotel I used a combination of free nights as well as 12,000 points per night.

Anyway, check in was a breeze given that it was 3 pm and the rooms were ready for us to occupy. All three rooms we booked were adjacent to each other on the second floor and they happily provided us with a very decent rollaway bed for my cousin to sleep on at no extra charge.

Hyatt Twin Club Room:

My sister and I shared a twin club room, which was pretty much your standard slightly upscale hotel room. The room was well designed. It had power outlets next to the beds, a fairly large TV (which we never turned on), and a comfortable lounge chair. Most importantly the room had a proper desk from where I could work. Marriott as of late seems to think desks are a stupid amenity. Overally the room was also of a fairly large size for Amsterdam or any European city for that matter.

The bathroom had a huge standing shower and a single vanity. Toiletries were by Pharmacopia and were of decent quality. Again the bathroom was probably way bigger than the norm for Europe.

The view from the window was pretty decent, but nothing to write home about.

Breakfast

Breakfast was served daily from 6:30 am to 11:00am at the hotel restaurant: Mama Makan. Despite being upgraded to club rooms, the HR club lounge was not open during our stay in April so all three rooms had breakfast at the restaurant.

The breakfast wasn’t some over the top buffet, but it certainly had everything you needed: fresh bread, pastries, milk, cereal, eggs made to order, and some hot dishes.

Service was excellent throughout our stay and I loved that the restaurant was open until 11 am for breakfast. The staff here make pretty good espressos and cappucinos. I only drink coffee once in a blue moon so take from it what you will.

There was a perfect table in the back where our entire party of 7 could just sit and relax. I would often show up just after my morning photography walk and have breakfast while the others slowly showed up. It was never really crowded or busy throughout our stay.

Other Amenities:

The hotel has a 24/7 fitness center which I did not make use of during our stay. Walking and biking around Amsterdam was enough exercise for me on a regular basis.

Transportation:

The hotel is located a bit away from the center of town and all the attractions and canal areas so getting around town is pretty much by foot or bike. The hotel has bikes for rent at 15 Euros a day, which was a tad expensive, but seemed to be more or less the market rate when it came to bike rentals with the convenience of returning at the hotel itself. I took full advantage of them in the mornings as I was in a rush to get to central Amsterdam for sunrise. Catching an Uber or taxi at the hotel is also pretty simple but I didn’t use either given that I had my rental car.

Bottom Line:

The Hyatt Regency Amsterdam is certainly my top choice for a stay in the city, plain and simple. Rooms are spacious, Wi-Fi fast, and loyalty is rewarded.  As a globalist member, the free parking was an amazing perk given that we had plans to explore tulips and the Dutch countryside. The fact that this hotel is a category 4 is just the cherry on top given that credit card free nights can be used here. I would definitely return here if Amsterdam decides to sort its staffing and capacity issues out.

What are your thoughts on the Hyatt Regency Amsterdam? Has the club lounge opened since April?
