In the spirit of the Feast of Saint Valentine, we thought it was only appropriate for this latest segment of Focal Point to focus on what is perhaps the most romantic of all landmarks, the Iron Lady: La tour Eiffel.
Designed and built by Gustave Eiffel for the 1889 World’s Fair, the Eiffel Tower held the record (320 m) as the tallest man-made structure in the world for over 40 years (until the Chrysler building overtook it). It is also the most visited paid monument in the world.
Fun fact: the Eiffel Tower was actually supposed to be a temporary structure (to be dismantled in 1909) but it got saved because it was re-purposed to work as a giant antenna.
