So one of the huge pitfalls of the Marriott-SPG Merger has been that SPG Amex Card no longer earns 3 Marriott points per dollar spent. I mentioned this in my previous rant about what I do and don’t like in the new program. It really makes me think about closing both my business and personal card completely because there are better cards out there to put my spending on.
Well this morning I woke up to the following email from AMEX, which raves about how I will earn 20,000 bonus points for every $10k I spend on my SPG AMEX Business Card with a maximum of 40,000 bonus points in total.
This does seem like a good deal for those that have plans to spend that large sum of money within the next 2-3 months, but it still doesn’t justify using the SPG AMEX Card for everyday spending because the earning rate is now only 2 Marriott points/$ spent.

As for me, I will probably look into our spending plans and decide whether this card is worth it or not to keep. Lately all of our stays have transitioned to AirBNBs in Europe so I don’t believe we will be staying too frequently in Marriotts altogether. So I’m still on the wall about canceling my SPG AMEX Cards.
