Since Teja just did a post on the excellent Westin Grand Central, I thought it was only appropriate for Focal Point to showcase the historic Grand Central Station. Did you know that we almost destroyed Grand Central multiple times? Grand Central Terminal was built alongside the historic Penn Station at the start of the 20th century. Unfortunately, in 1963, in what is often described as the architectural crime of the century, the above ground structure of Penn Station was destroyed. Luckily, the demolition galvanised the support for architectural preservation of Grand Central and, after a long legal struggle, it was finally marked as a New York City Landmark in 1978. With 44 railway platforms, Grand Central also holds the surprising record of having the most platforms of any railway station in the world.
