The quaint spa town of Baden-Baden is located in the Black Forest region of Germany close to the French border. The town has been renowned since the time of the Roman Emperor Hadrian (so they say) 160 AD as a luxury getaway for the elite of Europe. As I mentioned before I stayed at the Roomers Hotel Baden-Baden last summer for a single night and also visited the town back in 2014. Baden-Baden isn’t one of those towns you fall in love with immediately, but rather more of an acquired taste. It took me two visits to really appreciate that this town was really a gem hidden in plain sight.
The town itself has an understated elegance, which can easily be overlooked in favor of more touristy towns like Strasbourg and Colmar. And it seems like we are all the better off because of it. The lack of crowds combined with the Neo-Renaissance style architecture and subtle opulence give the town an atmosphere unlike any other. The town pretty much has everything you could possibly need for a memorable getaway: horse drawn carriages, casinos, boutique shops, restaurants, and of course several cathedrals from the olden days. And on summer evenings the town itself proves itself to be quite the entertainer with its beer gardens and concerts.
Enough of my ranting about it, here are 10 pictures of one of the quaintest and oldest towns in the Black Forest:
Though I had and have no interest in visiting one of the German spas during this stay or any other ( I’m not exactly 100% comfortable visiting nude spas ), I’m certainly looking forward to revisiting this charming little town, hopefully during the holiday season…….
Have you visited Baden-Baden? What is your favorite town in the Black Forest? Stay tuned for a look at the beautiful town of Colmar.
