Strolling through Charming Colmar: France’s Most Beautiful Town?

Strolling through Charming Colmar: France’s Most Beautiful Town?

Colmar in the Alsace Region of France is known for being one of the best preserved cities in all of Europe, having survived the World Wars, the French Revolution, and the Hundred Years War. The town is located approximately 125 km (1.5h drive) from Baden-Baden, Germany and about 65 km from the Swiss border. It was pretty much the ideal town to explore on our way to the Jungfrau Region of Switzerland and one more place to mark off my bucket list of places to visit in Europe. While the drive on the German Autobahn was quite uneventful (other than my breaking new records fastest I’ve driven), the drive along the French countryside was quite scenic with its vineyards and small towns.

So I’ve heard many things about the charm of Colmar, but nothing prepared me for seeing this architectural masterpiece of a place. The features that make this one of the finest towns in the world are almost unending: floral arrangements, heart shaped decorations on window shutters, hanging iron signboards, lanterns, street side cafes, and towering cathedrals. Street parking was free since it was a Sunday and people were scarce for the most part, until the late afternoon hours. There were patisseries, cafes, and restaurants every hundred feet. Many patisseries were even handing out generous samples of their delicious baked products. There were also some beautiful musical demonstrations in the center of town. Simply put I saw, ate, heard, and photographed the town to my heart’s content.
While I can’t quite relate my experience of Colmar in my imagery, I can leave you with some of my memoirs. Here are some of my images from that lovely Sunday in Colmar. I just can’t wait to go back!
Have you been to Colmar? What is your favorite French village/town?
